2017 Annual Refresher Training
(formerly the title was Annual Competency Training)
The Annual Refresher Trainings is providing a new user experience that includes visual appealing layout and design, as well as the ability to easily navigate the interface.
Please notice the NEW training module name 2017 Annual Refresher Training and formerly the title was Annual Competency Training.
The UW Medicine Annual Refresher Training is available to Airlift Northwest, Harborview Medical Center, Northwest Hospital and Medical Center, University of Washington Medical Center, UW Medicine Neighborhood Clinics and Valley Medical Center workforce members as of Tuesday, January 24, 2017.
This annual training is required of all workforce members who have not attended New Employee Orientation (NEO) in 2017. Additionally, UW Medicine Neighborhood Clinics workforce members must attend both NEO and complete the online 2017 Annual Refresher Training.
The content is reviewed and updated annually by subject matter experts across UW Medicine to meet regulatory requirements, highlight safety issues or explain any changes in policies and procedures.
The online training module is divided into six sections with new title changes*:

This module replaces the previous Annual Competency Training 2016 module.
Who should take the online training?
The online training is hosted on the UW Medicine LMS and assigned to workforce members with AMC accounts (UW Medicine Account log in) including retirees and UWMC hourly employees.

Who should take the paper version of the training?
Workforce members who are required to take the 2017 Annual Refresher Training (formerly known as Annual Competency Training) but do not have access to the UW Medicine LMS. This could be because the workforce member does not have a UW Medicine account (a requirement for access to the LMS), or the workforce member does not have access to a computer at their work location.
How do I get access to the paper version?
The 2017 Annual Refresher Training (formerly known as Annual Competency Training) is listed below.
The training requires completion of two sections, the UW Medicine system wide training called 2017 Annual Refresher Training and your organization specific training.

What is the managers/supervisors role when processing the paper training?
Managers are responsible for ensuring that workforce members who are required to take the 2017 Refresher Training complete either the online version in the UW Medicine LMS or the paper version.
Managers will be expected to validate completion that the workforce members understand the content to satisfy the 2017 Annual Refresher Training (formerly known as Annual Competency Training) requirements for the paper version.
How do managers/supervisors submit the paper training results?
Managers/supervisors will provide the below information to your UW Medicine contact (see below):
- Training Title: 2017 Annual Refresher Training paper version
- Workforce members full name (First and Last)
- Workforce members EID or workforce members LMS user name
- Paper Training Completion date

The paper completion of the paper training will be manually entered in the LMS and reflected in the completion reports after the quiz results have been submitted by the manager/supervisor to your UW Medicine contact below:
If I recently completed the 2016 Annual Competency Training module, will I need to complete the 2017 Annual Refresher Training module (formerly known as Annual Competency Training)?
Yes, you will need to complete the training material created for the current calendar year by the enterprise wide deadline on May 1, 2017.
If I attended new employee orientation this year, why don’t I have to take this Annual Refresher training (formerly known as Annual Competency Training)?
New Employee Orientation (NEO) is the mechanism for introducing new employees to our most up-to-date regulatory and safety information. Annual Competencies training is designed to update current employees on an annual basis with the same information presented at NEO. Therefore, if you are a workforce member at Airlift Northwest, Harborview Medical Center, UW Medical Center, or Valley Medical Center your NEO attendance meets the Annual Competency requirement for the current year.
UW Medicine Neighborhood Clinics training requirements are an exception and their new hires will attend NEO and complete the online 2017 Annual Refresher Training.
New Employees are required to complete all other orientations, trainings and electronic modules that are assigned to them.
I attended new employee orientation but the competencies training still shows in my TO DO list. Why?
If you attended New Employee Orientation (NEO) your attendance meets the Annual Competency requirement for the current year and you do not need to complete Annual Competencies on the LMS, if you work for Airlift Northwest, Harborview Medical Center, UW Medical Center, Valley Medical Center. UW Medicine Neighborhood Clinics training requirements are an exception and their new hires will attend NEO and complete the online 2017 Annual Refresher Training.
Completion status may take up to two weeks to be recorded in the LMS. If the competency training still shows on your TO DO list after two weeks please contact your local IT Service Desk (please see Additional Support, below).
Completion of any other orientation or department specific New Employee training does not satisfy the Annual Competency training requirement.
Why do I have to take this training annually?
Whether you have worked here for two years or twenty, the Annual Refresher Training (formerly known as Annual Competency Training) is a mechanism for keeping you up to date with the latest regulatory and safety information. This is considered the basic information that all workforce members should know. This annual training is required of all workforce members who have not attended New Employee Orientation (NEO) in 2017.
How do I get to the training?
UW Medicine Instructions:
To access this eLearning module, go to the UW Medicine Learning Management System (LMS): https://lms.uwmedicine.org/.
Click the START button next to 2017 Annual Refresher Training in your TO DO section of the LMS. Remember, if you aren’t sure who is logged in to the LMS, close all the browser windows and make sure you log in with your UW NetID.
To access Percipio LMS (the VMC Learning Management System), go to MyValley - Learn or go to the Launchpad - Application List. Once in the LMS, click the START button to begin your training listed in your TO DO section.
When using a shared computer, how do I know I will get credit?
To obtain credit for completing this training it is critical to ensure your name is displayed.
When you get to the Learner Dashboard, make sure your name is displayed on the upper right side of your screen. If not, you should close all browser windows and log in to the LMS with your own account credentials.
I don’t have time to do the annual competencies training at work. Can I do it at home?
UW Medicine workforce members please use a UW Medicine IT services standard desktop computer at work to complete your eLearning.
This information is not applicable for VMC employees accessing Percipio LMS at VMC.

If you access the online training and you do not have the “START” button in your LMS Learner page, or you are a supervisor/manager and you have someone who no longer is in the organization, contact email@example.com with the employee’s name, EID, and what action should be taken.
- Remember to always close the content window when you walk away from the computer or when you are no longer interacting with the online module. This will ensure your progress is always maintained in the LMS. You could lose your progress if you leave the content window unattended for too long as the session will time out and you may have to restart from the beginning.
